Gordon Hayward suffered a severe leg injury during the Celtic vs Cavs game at the start of the 2017-18 season. Since then, he's been very open about his injury.
His blog post "In an Instant" walks fans through his experience, starting from the very moment he landed on the floor of the court. It ends with words that showcase his genuinely inspiring outlook, "I keep imagining what it’s going to be like to step onto the floor at the Garden, and make my regular season debut as a Celtic. It’s going to be a little delayed. But with each day of my rehab, I’ll be that much closer to making it happen."
Aside from Hayward's admirable outlook on his circumstance, the leg injury has brought to light another praiseworthy aspect of the NBA: the players. Not only has Hayward's team been supportive following the injury, but players from all teams. Many of them have sent their prayers and best wishes through social media. Others have gone the extra mile and reached out to him personally, whether that was by technology or in-person contact.
Kobe Bryant, retired player from the Lakers, has notably invested in Hayward during this time, with his heartfelt Instagram post and alleged contact with Gordon Hayward.
I love the way this video from NBA highlights puts it:
"Cause at the end of the day, these guys are brothers in arms. They might be competition between the lines, but we all know how hard it took for us to get here, to get to this level."
This quote captures the idea that, when it really comes down to it, all NBA players are striving towards the same goal, united in their passion for basketball, regardless of their team alliance. The example that these men have set in their respect for one another is one that can be followed in all areas of life- whether it's respecting players from other teams, members of other political parties, or people with different beliefs.
We're all walking through life with our individual passions and gifts; sometimes that divides us. But at the end of the day, we're all human and we all deserve respect. Shoutout to the NBA for perfectly demonstrating this life lesson.
